The broccoli was cooked and seasoned perfectly, the oyster sauce was a great addition but not overpowering, and the puffed tendon provided a wonderful contrast to the broccoli. The gai lan, which is grilled chinese broccoli, beef tallow, puffed tendon, and oyster sauce was spot on. We didn’t like this dish, which was bland.īut then we got to the good part. Although we really liked it, we probably would not order it next time because it was heavily fried and had too much spice.ĭinner continued with the beijing duck rolls, with scallion pancakes, five spice hoisin, and cabbage. It had a dry spice that can sneak up on you. Our friend warned us that the dish is very spicy, so we approached it cautiously. And we won’t order it next time we hit up Hop Alley. Although we didn’t hate the dish, we didn’t become tofu converts either. Our friend loved it though, so we acquiesced. Plus, it’s outside our neighborhood, and we had a long list of places to try. They only offer limited reservations though. It is on the Eater 38, Gail Simmons gave it props, and it is on 5280’s list of best restaurants. We have heard buzz about Hop Alley (35th and Larimer) since we moved to Denver.
